Once upon a time, in a small village in West Sumatera lived a mother and her son. They were very poor. The son was called Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby. They only source of income is fishing, but they didn't get much.

Malin Kundang grew as a strong and skillful young man. Looking for a better life he decided to sail overseas. With a heavy heart, her mother let him go. Everyday Malin Kundang's mother prayed to God for her son’s safety.  

Many years without any news, but she kept praying and waiting for him. One day a big ship landed on a beach near the village. It was Malin Kundang's ship. He is a wealthy and successful man now. He has a beautiful wife. Malin Kundang's mother heard about this, she was very happy and ran to the beach to see him. She wanted to hug her son.  

She arrived at the beach and saw Malin Kundang but he was ashamed to admit his own mother in front of his beautiful wife. Malin Kundang mother was very sad and hurt. She cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang didn't care and really set sail.

In the quiet sea, suddenly the wind blew so hard and a thunderstorm came. Malin Kundang’s huge ship was wrecked. Suddenly, his whole body turned into stone. He was punished for not admitting his own mother.*

Ada beberapa bentuk past tense yaitu Simple Past Tense dan Past Continuous Tense:

Simple Past tense adalah tenses yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan suatu aktivitas di masa lampau dan sudah selesai. Bentuk dari simple past tense adalah sebagai berikut:

(+) Subject + Verb 2

(-) Subject + did not + infinitive without to

(?) Did + Subject + infinitive without to

Perubahan Verb 1 ⇒ verb 2 ada dua macam yaitu:

• Regular Verb, yaitu perubahannya secara teratur dengan menambahkan -d/ed pada verb, misalnya: walk-walked, talk-talked

• Irregular Verb, yaitu jika perubahannya tidak mengikut aturan regular verb, misalnya: sleep-slept, see-saw, write-wrote

Keterangan waktu yang biasanya mengikut past tense diantaranya yesterday, last night, two days ago, this morning, last year.

contoh kalimat simple past tense:

1. She kept praying for her son.
2. Malin Kundang decided to sail overseas.
3. They lived in a small village.
4. Her mother wanted to see him.

Past continuous tense, yaitu tense yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan suatu aktivitas yang berlangsung secara terus-menerus di waktu lampau ketika suatu aktivitas lain menginterupsi/menyela. Aktivitas yang menginterupsi merupakan aktivitas yang lebih pendek.

Bentuk umum dari Past Continuous Tense adalah:

SUBJECT + WAS/WERE + VERB-Ing

Contoh kalimat yang menggunakan past continuous tense:

1. They were cooking in the kitchen when the guest came.
2. Adrian was playing outside when his father called.
3. At 7 o'clock, I was eating dinner.
4. We were watching the movie at 10 PM last night.
5. Mother was having a shower when my little brother cried.
